Auto Lab Sees a Man Through a Complicated Multistep Auto Repair

Bringing your car back in after it has been repaired can seem like a never-ending loop of expenses. But we got Jeff's car through a multistep auto repair and back on the road with minimal cost.

Jeff Mateer of Libertyville first noticed a strange noise on his 2004 VW Touareg, along with some vibration in the car. This was after a driveshaft had been replaced.This time it was a different problem: the front differential needed replacement. New ones are incredibly expensive, so we looked around for a used one and installed it. We found the part was bad after we test drove it, so we called Jeff to let him know he needed a different part. It wouldn’t have hurt the car to drive it, so he agreed to take it home while we found another part.After locating another front differential, we installed that one with no problems. However, that wasn’t the end of it.“Later that day after I’d picked up the car, I was driving it and started to hear an engine sound – kind of like a diesel sounds,” says Jeff. “I thought, 'this is no good.' But then it stopped. Next day, the noise started up again. I took a video of it in case it stopped again. At the same time, the check engine light came on. I called them and said, ‘Hey, something’s going on.’”After we inspected the car, it turned out a hose needed to be replaced. We felt bad that Jeff was in the shop again after so many trips. So we did that service complimentary.To add to matters, during the inspection that found the hose problem, it turned out a bolt had fallen off the chassis and a headlight needed replacing. It wasn’t related to the prior repairs. Just an extreme case of bad luck. So we fixed those issues, as well.

It can be frustrating having to take a car to the shop over and over again.
